The game is played withplayers and includes 110 train cards, 14 locomotives (wild cards), and 30 destination tickets. Each player starts with 45 colored train car cards and 4 train car cards.

One of the unique aspects of Tickets Ride On! is the use of locomotives as wild cards. These multicolored cards can be part of any set of cards when claiming a route. However, if a locomotive card is one of the five face-up cards, the player who draws it can only draw one card instead of two.

The game ends when a player's train stock reaches 0, 1, or 2 at the end of their turn. Each player, including the one with depleted train stock, gets one final turn. Points are lost if a player fails to successfully complete the route given on their destination ticket.
